Extra titelinformatie

The Crossbill Guide Rhodope Mountains covers the Bulgarian part of the Rhodope Mountain chain that forms the border with Greece. The Rhodope Mountains are often considered to contain two parts, a high and very green western and a lower and drier eastern part. Both are covered in this book.
Additionally, there are two other areas included in the guide: the wide lowland valley of the Maritsa river, where the large cities of Plovdiv, Haskovo and Svilengrad are situated. The final area covered in this book is the small mountain range of Sakar, which lies just east of the Maritsa, on the border with Turkey. This is a dry region with a steppe-like landscape.
This book is partly an update of our 2013 guidebook to the Eastern Rhodopes. However there are many changes in comparison to the older book: This new guide covers a much wider region in Bulgaria (the old version only described the Eastern Rhodopes) but excludes Northeast Greece, which was in the first version. For the new book we also worked closely and in partnership with Rewilding Rhodopes.

THE RHODOPE MOUNTAINS GUIDEBOOK COVERS:
The Eastern Rhodopes, including Madzharovo with its raptor cliffs, the unspoilt Byala Reka valley, Ivaylovgrad with its many orchids, the rewilding areas between Krumovgrad and Kardzhali.
Sakar, with its many eagles, susliks, east-Mediterranean reptiles and dragonflies.
Maritsa Valley, with its marshes and riparian forests with Masked Shrikes and Levan Sparrohawks.
The Western Rhodopes, with its extensive forests with Brown Bears and Capercaillies, and karstic plateaux, alive with butterflies and spectacular gorges with Wallcreepers and a rare flora.
